Devotional Wallpaper and Placards derives as one strand from the larger Devotional series, which began as a project in 1999.

One repeat of the wallpaper design consists of two hundred hand-drawn modular segments containing the names of Black women in British music from the 19th century and into the 21st century. One tile of the repeat pattern stretches 500cm across by 200cm high, and repeats and expands exponentially to fill the exhibition space.

The names of the performers are taken from an ever-developing roll call, nominated by a wide public of contributors.

Between 2014 and 2018 the wallpaper design changed each year as certain modular segments were taken out and replaced with new segments across the historical span of names gathered. In this way, the implied remembrance and occlusion underscores the ever-changing print.

In 2017 and 2018 one hundred placards depicting paper items of magazine features and concert notifications was formed to complete the installation of the wallpaper.
