In 1990, Boyce participated in the exhibition 'The Invisible City' at the Photographer's Gallery, London, for which she created The Photobooth and The Ticket Machine. The curator David Chandler described the works as hinged on 'the physical tensions of the city - the body confined and in transit', and developed an 'interplay between private and public spaces' between anonymous collectivity and singularity. At the push of a button, the ticket machine dispensed postcards addressed to 'My dearest' ; written in a diaristic tone, they expressed feelings or offered future scenarios involving pleasure and danger.
