Pillowcase (1990) is a pillowcase on which the artist imprinted lonely hearts ads on a massive scale. For the first time, Boyce used real advertisements, culled from the lonely hearts pages which elicited an uncomfortable response from viewers who felt uneasy standing in front of this large re-construction of advertisements which are usually read surreptitiously, as an illicit and intimate activity. The appeal for the artist of the small ads lay in their status of 'fragments of life', partial narratives which like art works are fabricated by their authors according to pre-determined rules and formats.
