Sonia Boyce in Survey Exhibition at Tate Britain, London
Tate Britain presents the first major survey of acclaimed British artist Sonia Boyce DBE RA, celebrating a forty-year career shaped by fierce experimentation and a refusal to conform. Spanning large-scale installation, photography, collage, drawing, film, and sculpture, the multi-sensory exhibition traces Boyce’s pioneering collaborative and improvisational techniques.
Emerging in the 1980s within the British Black Arts Movement, Boyce’s work invites audiences on a playful journey into profound questions of collective memory, authorship, and the boundaries between private and public experiences. For this survey, celebrated works are reimagined and shown in dialogue with installations never previously exhibited in the UK. Highlights include the most extensive presentation to date of her early pastel drawings and collages, alongside the Devotional series—her living, ever-growing archive created in conversation with the public.
Boyce’s practice, grounded in art as social engagement, gained further global recognition when she represented Great Britain at the (2022) Venice Biennale and was awarded the prestigious Golden Lion.
